MegaCon Tampa Bay 2016 Event Coverage

MegaCon Tampa Bay has wrapped up their first convention held at the Tampa Bay Convention Center in Tampa, Florida. The dates for the event were Friday October 28, 2016 through Sunday October 30, 2016, and the multi genre convention welcomed over 30,000 fans. The pop culture event had something for everyone. There was several celebrity attendees, cosplayers, shopping with unique vendors, exciting and interesting panels, speed dating, and so much more.

MegaCon Tampa Bay 2016 had big name talent such as David Tennant and Billie Piper of Doctor Who. Henry Winkler, Verne Troyer, LeVar Burton, and the creator of Deadpool, Rob Liefield are just a few of the amazing guests that had fans lined up for an autograph and photograph. Sunday had a huge attendance of Doctor Who cosplayers, with people costuming as the various Doctors, Weeping Angels, Cybermen, Daleks and TARDIS’s galore. Even Sonic the Cosplayer was dressed as the eleventh Doctor from Doctor Who on Sunday. Other highlights from the event include the official After Party at The Orpheum in Ybor City where DJ D’Vinci had costumed guests dancing Saturday night. Earlier on Saturday at the convention fans were treated to an amazing Rocky Horror Picture Show Live Shadowcast by Cheap Little Punks.

Attending the events, activities, and autograph signings are enjoyable things to do at conventions, but some feel the ultimate experience is for cosplayers to dress as their favorite characters. Some cosplayers put days, even months into their costumes for a convention. MegaCon Tampa Bay had thousands of cosplayers in attendance. Many cosplayers were treated like stars themselves, being constantly asked for photographs and even sometimes autographs. Marie-Claude Bourbonnais (also famously known as MC) attended the event as a cosplay guest and came all the way from Quebec, Canada. Lauren See, Scarlett Rose, Gothic Sushi, April Hunter, Siren Croft, Tara Lynne, Nana The Red and Bane Bravo were also cosplay guests at MegaCon Tampa Bay. Everyone that comiccoverage.com had the chance to photograph were friendly and happy to take a moment to strike a pose.

MegaCon Tampa Bay had many talented artists set up on Artist Alley. The aisles were crowded all three days as attendees browsed the booths of artists, authors, publishers, and comic book guests. Fans frequented the booths of creative artists such as Liam Sharp, Rob Liefield, Greg Land, and Bob McLeod, just to name a few. Several distinguished authors were also in attendance. Author Dave G. McDaniel who wrote the five book Star Angel series was happy to describe the books plot to eager listeners. Many of the vendor booths were slammed the entire weekend as fans made purchases of one of a kind collectibles, hand made clothes, toys, blankets, jewelry, and a plethora of unlimited pop culture paraphernalia.

MegaCon is a well established name in the world of pop culture conventions. MegaCon Orlando in Orlando, Florida was first held in 1993. The convention has had several other events, including MegaCon Fan Days. Although MegaCon has been sold a few times, it’s owners have always stayed true to the heart of the convention. The people at Fan Expo have worked tirelessly to make the event the successful convention that it has become. This was the first year in almost twenty three years that the event was held in Tampa, Florida. Andrew Moyes, the show director of Fan Expo HQ said, “It was thrilling to see the overwhelming turn out this weekend for our first ever MegaCon Tampa Bay.” Because the event was a success, Fan Expo has decided to bring MegaCon back to Tampa. The dates for MegaCon Tampa Bay 2017 will be Friday, September 29 through Sunday, October 1 2017. Be sure to mark your calendars, and we hope to see you all in Tampa, Florida again next year.
